PINS FOR PINES!
The Supervisor’s Youth Council is made up of students in grades 8 through 12 from all areas of the Town and they have one common goal: to make the Town of
Cheektowaga a better place to live!
Each year since its inception, three years ago, the students who have served on the Supervisor’s Youth Council have conducted a fund raising event for youth in their age group that was fun for them while also benefiting a deserving cause.
This year they focused their fund raising efforts on helping to replace a few of the many trees that were destroyed by what has come to be known as the “October Surprise.”
The Supervisor’s Youth Council members learned that
Cheektowaga had lost about 50% of its vegetation during the storm.
Re-planting half of the Town’s greenery is a very long-drawn-out and costly process.
The members immediately wanted to help.
They decided to hold a Bowling Lock-In at
Broadway
Sports
Center to raise money to purchase new trees for the Town of
Cheektowaga.
The Council went to work planning a fun-filled night of bowling, pool, darts, foosball, cards, board games, playstation 2, food and much more.
All 8th-12th graders were welcome to attend the event and tickets were sold at most of the schools, at Club Mocha, at after school programs and at the
Alexander
Community Center.
The event was a huge success!
There were 96 students in attendance, some all the way from
Starpoint
High School in
Niagara
County.
The Bowling Lock-In raised over $600 for the re-planting effort.
This was an event that was planned for students, by students, and all for the good of the Town.
These young leaders saw a need and stepped right in to help alleviate the burden.
We can all be proud to say: This is our future! |
