TOWN OF CHEEKTOWAGA
VACANCY ON THE BOARD OF ASSESSMENT REVIEW
The Town of Cheektowaga is seeking a candidate to serve on the Board of Assessment Review (BAR). BAR Hearings evaluate assessment reviews and are open to the public under the State’s Open Meeting Law. BAR Members are local public officers and are required to be at least 18 years of age, citizens of the United States and residents of the Town of Cheektowaga (Public Officers Law, section 3).
The individual seeking appointment to the Board of Assessment Review must possess the necessary qualifications to discern and implement the guidelines set forth by New York State Real Property Tax Law to make a clear and fair decision regarding real property assessments.
A background in Real Estate/Appraising is preferred as well as knowledge of the legal system as it relates to real property.
Additionally, the ideal candidate MUST be available for training before Grievance Day, attendance on Grievance Day (held Wednesday following the fourth Tuesday in May) and subsequent days to review the grievances and make informed decisions.
Each board member is required to deliberate their decisions in a fair and timely manner. They must recuse themselves if there is a conflict of interest with a specific property or resident.
A member of the Board of Assessment Review for The Town of Cheektowaga must adhere to a strict code of ethics.
There is currently one vacancy for appointment to a 5 year term. Interested candidates should forward a letter of interest and a resume to the Personnel Department and the Town Assessor at 3301 Broadway, Cheektowaga, NY 14227. The application deadline is September 1, 2026.
